Business as Functional

Project name
Rica G20 Hotel Room
Year
2009

With locations in Norway and Sweden, the Rica Hotels chain is known for its vibrant take on the minimalist Scandinavian style. Rica challenged us to develop an interior design solution for their business hotel in Oslo, made with the on-the-go business wo/man in mind. The rooms were designed so that they could be converted and rearranged to fit a small but workable room space.

The rooms featured many convertible aspects, like the shelving around the flip-out TV for decoration or storage, and the luggage bench that doubled as guest seating. Developing the lighting was a particularly involved process, as we were instructed not to add light fixtures to the walls or ceilings. So we went with custom-made adjustable lamps, which were mounted onto the desks, headboards and tops of the shelving units. We did this with the lighting experts at Concept Design, and ran several computer and real-world light tests to make sure that the lighting was ample and energetic enough for all times of day and night.
