The DEFA family of automotive, security, and marine products is known for providing innovative solutions to the residence and leisure markets. Since 1946, they have produced quality alarm and heating systems, tracking solutions, and chargers to suit a wide array of gadgets.

Input

DEFA came to WORK with the idea of redesigning the Handy70, their car battery charger.

Output

We began with research on the average consumer’s relationship to their car battery charger. It was not pretty. People didn’t like chargers, primarily because they were afraid of them. All the cables, wires, the possibility/guarantee of sparks, and the cumbersome battery clips were off-putting to say the least. It was also very confusing to identify the right kind of charger for their battery, and to figure out their exact battery type.

We developed the DEFA Smartcharge, which was easy to understand, easy to use, and easy to store. The one-button control coupled with iconography from mobile devices made it approachable and simple. Concise, bright indicators informed the user whether or not the clips were in the right place, and how far along the battery was in the charging process. We also included a temperature sensor, which adjusted the power to the temperature of the battery to prevent sparks, overheating or overcharging.

Outcome

We oversaw the engineering and production during throughout the Smartcharge’s sleek reinvention. We then devised the packaging and corresponding website upon its completion.
